PATIOS FESTIVAL IN CÓRDOBA
The Fiesta de los Patios de Córdoba (Patios Festival) is a contest in which participants open their courtyards to the public, free of charge, so that they can be visited within a certain time. It is a celebration that has been declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. The Patios have become true works of art, an explosion of color with the pots of the interior, the bars, wells and balconies.
Every spring Córdoba bursts into bloom with special festivities for the month of May. Starting off with a parade known as the “Battle of the Flowers”, the city officially launches into its spring celebrations with the May Crosses festival usually taking place during the first week of the month, followed by the Patio Contests that can easily continue well past the middle of the month – which just gives residents time to get ready for the annual fair at the end of May!
This unique tradition allows tourists to contemplate the courtyards. Some small paradises that tend to be hidden before the curious eyes. A sea of flowers and aromatic plants envelop the visitor with its sweet fragrance and colors. It is a pleasure for the senses. You almost forgot to be in the middle of a big city.
May is Cordovan month par excellence. The festivities begin with the May Crosses and end with the Córdoba Fair . Without a doubt it is the best time to visit this beautiful ancient city.
Tip : The courtyards that participate in the contest are scattered around the historic city and are marked with potted hedges that flank the door. In this way they are easily identifiable.
History: The Patios Festival began in 1918 in Cordoba, was interrupted by the Civil War and came back strongly in the fifties until today. The patio has always been the living room, the meeting point for the meeting and the gathering. Outside the house was the bustle, peace and tranquility reigned inside.
