Semana Santa in Tenerife

Known as Easter Holy Week, Semana Santa is a religious festival. A few parades happen in the authentic towns of Tenerife, the most essential being in La Laguna (a recorded UNESCO World Heritage Site). Great Friday furnishes the most foreseen occasions with the evening ‘Procesion Magna’ trailed by the night ‘Procesion del Silencio’. The town goes quiet, streetlights are killed and the entire town is lit by candles. An occasion not to be missed.

Semana Santa is the Easter parade and this is a solumn but moving parade when religious brotherhoods wear traditional cloaks with pointed hoods and parade through the streets carrying a cross. La Laguna is Tenerife’s religious centre and this is the best place for the Samana Santa celebrations. La Orotava, Garachico, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Puerto de la Cruz all have Semana Santa festivals.
