SUMMARY:The Mercé Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Mercé Festival\nThe main day of La Mercè is always 24 September\, but the start and finish dates of the festival change from year to year. \nLa Mercè de Barcelona lasts 4 days and is a festival that takes place in honor of the Mare de Deu de la Mercè (Mother of God of Mercy)\, the patron saint of Barcelona.A multitude of activities will be organized across Barcelona\, among them many Catalan traditions. The Mercè festival is an opportunity to dive headfirst into Catalan culture by participating in activities and events designed for all audiences. \nThe significance of the date is that according to a legend on 24 September\, the Virgin simultaneously appeared to King James I of Aragon\, Saint Peter Nolasco and Saint Raymond of Penyafort. This was during the Crusades. It’s told that she asked them to create an order of monks to save Christians imprisoned by Muslim Moors. Peter Nolesco founded the Order of Our Lady of Mercy in 1218 to negotiate war ransoms to free prisoners. \nLater\, during the Renaissance in 1687\, a plague of locusts struck Barcelona. Being a very religious city at the time\, it was officially decided to call on the help of the Virgin of Mercy to protect them. The plague eventually passed and calls were made for her to be a city patron. A request that wouldn’t be officially formalised until 1868. \nIt was after this date that the first official celebrations began in 1902 in the form we know them today. Since then the celebrations have been on and off depending on the year\, for causes such as the Franco dictatorship. Today\, they are now one of the most important celebrations of the city. \nA significant event during this festival is the Correfoc (fire run)\, where a «dragon» with lots of fireworks attached to it strolls the streets of Barcelona\, with Diables (or Devils) shooting off fireworks while menacing people that wish to watch. If you’re with a family\, there is also a milder version for children and starts much earlier than the main Correfoc.

SUMMARY:Festival of Horta
DESCRIPTION:Festival of Horta\nThere are activities of all kinds\, including dances\, concerts\, children’s activities\, community meals\, sporting events and gymnastics. The local culture of the neighbourhood — rich and varied as it is — also plays an important role. All the neighbourhood associations go together during the opening parade. During the festival there are dance exhibitions and shows\, and a Correfoc (fire run) finale. \nFrom 8–17 September\, activities in the neighborhood are continuously happening and offer possibilities for all tastes and ages. In this Festa Major\, a special atmosphere can be felt and in the street you’ll find food and drink at agreeable prices. \nLike other places in Barcelona with their own neighborhood festivals\, the Festa Major de Horta was created by its neighbors. On 10 September 1731 it was celebrated for the first time in Horta by public vote. Neighbourhood festivities in Barcelona are usually held in honour of their patron saint\, and Horta’s festival is formed in honor of Saint Gaudentius. Since then\, each year on 10 September\, the town of Horta has celebrated a ceremony in front of Sant Joan d’Horta parish church as just one part of this big festival. \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Semana Grande in Bilbao
DESCRIPTION:Semana Grande in Bilbao\nDuring the Semana Grande of Bilbao the festivities are celebrated in honor of the Virgin of Begoña. \nThe Biscayan capital hosts concerts\, shows\, theater\, fireworks and children’s activities in different stages of the city such as the Plaza Nueva\, the Bizkaia\, the Unamuno or the Encarnación\, the Uribitarte or the Arenal. The proclamation and the chupinazo\, which starts the festivities\, take place from the Arriaga Theater. \nIn addition\, in the bullring of Vista Alegre the bullfighting fair is celebrated\, which includes a corrida de rejones and eight bullfights. \nOnce a rocket is shot into the sky (known as the txupinazo)\, the festivals mascot\, Marijaia\, makes her grand entrance onto the balcony. What follows next is the culmination of events that forms the biggest party of the year\, known as Aste Nagusia or Semana Grande. \nAt Aste Nagusia\, Basque culture is celebrated at its fullest. There is traditional Basque music and dancing\, as well as Basque rural sports such as wood chopping and stone carrying competitions. The streets are lined with tents offering a wide variety of food and drinks. And for the kids there are parades of giants and the Gargantua\, who devours the children who enter into his mouth. But don’t worry\, inside the Gargantua is a slide and the children exit safely from his posterior.

SUMMARY:Virgin Begoña Festival
DESCRIPTION:Virgin Begoña Festival\nAste Nagusia is a must for all those who wish to discover the festive spirit of Bilbao which\, over a 10-day period\, is transformed into a major centre of festivities and entertainment for people of all ages. The celebrations begin on the Saturday following the festival of Nuestra Señora de Begoña on August 15. \nThe international fireworks competition lights up the sky every night until the day when\, sadly\, the inhabitants of “El Botxo” have to submerge the figure of “Marijaia” in the waters of the river until the following year. Semana Grande is the biggest festival in northern Spain. Dedicated to the Virgin of Begoña\, affectionately known as Amatxu\, or Mother\, to the Basques\, this is a celebration of Basque heritage as much as religion. Most of the inhabitants of the city take a week off – so don’t expect all the shops to be open\, or you’ll be disappointed – and simply take part in one of Europe’s most exhilarating street parties.

SUMMARY:Festival of Gracia
DESCRIPTION:Festival of Gracia\nFrom 15 August\, over seven days of activities for all ages will take place continuously. The festival has a special ambience and there will be food and refreshments in the streets at affordable prices. \nThe festivals started in 1817\, or at least that’s the earliest recorded date historians have about the festival. That means this year is the second centenary of the festival\, marking 200 years. Said malcontent was reflected in the decoration of the streets\, concerts titled Nova Canço Catalana (New Catalan Song) and carrying out traditional Catalan activities. \nDuring the dictatorship of Franco\, the festival had a malcontented tone that was in favour of democracy and Catalan culture during a time of Catalan suppression. \nThe biggest attraction of the festival are the street decorations around the neighbourhood\, each with a different theme. Various streets battle it out for the most original decorations and the best takes the annual prize. This all results in some very creative transformations. \nHandmade ornamental elements fill all corners of Gracia. They are true works of art\, made by the area’s own neighbours\, which flood their streets with colour\, life and art. Each street chooses its own theme. They use any recycled and recyclable material at their disposal\, such as paper\, coloured paperboard and bottles. \nThis practice can be tracked to the beginning of the 20th Century\, with evidence that spectacular scenery was staged along the streets\, including pieces from important artists of the time. In 1935\, the Comitè de Fires i Festes (Fairs and Festivals Committee) was created\, the precursor to Federació de la Festa Major de Gràcia (Festa Major de Gracia Federation). In 1975\, only five streets were decorated\, but little by little the tradition was recovering. Today there are countless streets that are decorated with a different theme every year. \nhis traditional Catalan circle dance is accompanied by a live music. Participants hold hands — usually alternating between sexes — and dance in light movements. \nThe dance can vary in number of participants and doesn’t require great physical condition outside of competitive styles\, making it very accessible for anyone wishing to take part. It’s a rather simplistic dance so that it’s open to everyone to join in\, which is why it’s so popular.

The festival is in honour of the Virgen de La Paloma\, and includes street dancing\, traditional zarzuelas (Spanish operatic theatre) and lots of eating\, drinking and having a good time. \n (La Paloma) Festival is one of the most traditional and well – known celebrations in Madrid. Its history dates back to the eighteenth century\, when some children found its picture in a corral. They sold the picture to a Madrilenian named Isabel Tintero\, who first used it to display at her door. Her neighbors who came in search of cure and protection where captivated by the image in the painting that made the Virgin so famous. In 1912\, the picture of La Paloma Virgin was moved to the new chapel (which was made for her) that is situated on a street with her same name. Between 1891 and 1911\, the San Pedro el Real de la Paloma parish was build to cater the larger devotees who continued to come to seek for cure and protection. \nIn Madrid\, this festival is celebrated annually from the sixth to fifteenth day of August and which is mainly held across the Plaza de las Vistillas. Although the festival originally begins on the eleventh day of August with the fifteenth as the climax\, Madrileños’ love for good entertainment stretched the occasion. During the duration of the festival\, many activities are made available like free live concerts\, shows presentation traditional dances and costumes and many more. SUMMARY:San Lorenzo
DESCRIPTION:San Lorenzo\n\n\n\nIn August\, Madrid celebrates its most traditional fiestas: San Cayetano\, San Lorenzo and La Paloma. They begin with San Cayetano\, in the area of Rastro / Embajadores\, continue with San Lorenzo\, in Lavapiés\, and end with the most important and largest of all\, the de la Paloma\, in La Latina. \nThe next of Madrid’s August fiestas (August 9-11) takes place in Lavapiés\, one of the city’s most multicultural neighborhoods. Most people wait until dusk to head out and party\, the (slightly) cooler temperatures make enjoying a drink and tapas from one of the specially set up street bars a pleasure. The fiestas also include plenty of children’s activities and have a welcoming\, family atmosphere. \nAll the festivals feature many activities with competitions\, children’s activities as well as live music performances from local groups which can include marching bands\, traditional folk music and the chance to watch dances such as the chotis alongside a selection of other modern music performances that also occur and to help keep you going there are more often than not plenty of market stalls offering a good selection of food and drink. \nStreet processions also play an important part of the festivals and each of the honored saints is often carried high for all to view and celebrate\, the festivals provide the chance for the whole community to come together and there is a real sense of community spirit. \nThe Madrileños dress up in chulapo suits (traditional period clothes) and dance the chotis in the streets. The most traditional areas of the capital\, such as Lavapies\, La Latina or las Vistillas\, are decorated to celebrate the fiestas of San Cayetano\, San Lorenzo and La Paloma. During daytime there are processions dedicated to the Madonna and the saints\, and at night open-air festivities that last several days with the participation of the public at large. \nThese celebrations have a strong community spirit and are an inseparable part of the real Madrid\, one that holds dear its traditional image as a party-loving\, sociable city with one simple aim – to have a good time. And of course\, it extends a very warm welcome to anyone wanting to join in. The programme of events typically includes children’s games and competitions\, card tournaments\, performances by bands and pop groups\, tapas routes and the procession honouring the saint or virgin in whose name the festival is being held. \nThe neighbours and traders of Madrid’s most traditional neighbourhoods still observe the old custom of decorating the streets where the festivities mostly take place\, and every year the Municipal Committee gives a prize to the most attractive façade\, street\, balcony and urban ensemble. \nMen and women between the ages of 16 and 40 can stand for election as the characters from the popular zarzuela operetta La Verbena de la Paloma: La Casta\, La Susana\, Don Hilarión (older gentlemen can compete for this character) and El Julián; as well as the Maja of Lavapiés. \nStreet fairs\, popular races\, mus (a card game) and rana (a coin throwing game) championships\, marching bands\, lemonade\, children’s games\, sangria\, hot chocolate\, dance and organ music\, Manila shawl competitions\, sardines\, secrets\, churros\, elections to choose the child chulapa and chulapo (girl or boy dressed in traditional local attire)\, concerts… These are just some of the activities organised within the framework of these festivals for all the family. \n

SUMMARY:San Fermín In Pamplona
DESCRIPTION:San Fermín (Running of the Bulls)\n\n\n\nThe fiestas of San Fermin are celebrated in Irunea/Pamplona\, in the region of Navarra\, every year from the 6th to the 14th of July. They have become internationally known because of the running of the bulls\, where the bulls are lead through the streets of the old quarter as far as the bull ring by runners. \nThe fiestas are celebrated in honor of San Fermin\, patron saint of Navarra\, although the religious aspect would seem to have taken on a secondary role over the last number of years. Nowadays\, the fiestas are seen as a mass gathering of people from all the corners of the world and where the partying\, the fun and the joy of it all are the most outstanding ingredients. \nEach time you’ve watched it on TV\, you’ve presumably asked yourself for what good reason anyone in their correct personality would keep running before a pack of irate bulls. The truth of the matter is\, hundreds of years prior the «Pamplona Running with the Bulls» began as a component of a standout amongst the most globally famous celebration in Spain; San Fermin. On the off chance that you haven’t had the joy of encountering Spain’s most anticipated celebrations\, you should visit Spain for San Fermin 2019. \nYou can find the bullfighting calendar of Spain here.

SUMMARY:Festival of Poblenou
DESCRIPTION:Festival of Poblenou\nThe Festa Major of Poblenou (Major Festival of Poblenou) is celebrated during the first half of September. The neighbourhood associations are actively involved in the organization of activities of these festivities. For two weeks music\, art\, dance and sport have a significant role. The associations take charge of providing different events\, including Gegants (giants)\, Correfocs (Fire runs)\, street meals\, workshops for children and even sports championships. \n\nThe neighborhood has a long festive tradition. This is demonstrated in documents dated back to 1800 that confirm the existence of this celebration when Poblenou was just a small village on the outskirts of Barcelona. \nMore than 20 festive events are organized daily across the 12 streets that participate in the festival. The celebrations were stopped by the Franco regime during the dictatorship in Spain\, but they began again in 1976. Since this date it’s been ongoing each year without fail. \nEvery year\, neighbours forge their hardships for a few days and gather to celebrate their biggest festival\, which is organized in two different ways. One is the programme from the Official Commission and the other is a programme that the residents of the neighbourhood make in the streets. \n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Sant Roc Festival
DESCRIPTION:Sant Roc Festival\nThe Gothic Quarter’s annual neighbourhood celebrations called ‘Festes de Sant Roc’ (Festival of Saint Roch) were announced on 21 March 2017 as a ‘Patrimonial Festival of National Interest’. They are the oldest celebration of their kind in Barcelona\, having been going since 1589. \nFrom 11 to 16 August\, the Gothic Quarter fills with tradition and history. The festivities take place for the most part on Plaça Nova. Many activities mark these days and make this celebration iconic\, like the raising of the heraldic flag of Sant Roc; The ‘festa del gos’ (festival of the dog)\, and drinks from an unusually long porrón (a traditional drinking vessel in Catalonia) along with the traditional panellets.\n\nThis is the most traditional part of the festival. It takes place on the Saint Roch Day — 16 August — at 9:30PM. There will be various characters present\, such as the fire-spitting ‘Diable’\, eagle of the city\, Lion of Barcelona\, aforementioned Gegants\, dwarf Cu-cut and wielders of the Patron Saint’s flags… among others. They march together toward the Basilica del Pi to participate in a sung mass in honour of the saint. They will also bless the panellets that will be shared among attendants.
